Training
At South Curl Curl we aim to provide training that is relevant to the needs of our lifesaving community but also ensure that it is current and of the highest standard. Our trainers have a great passion for keeping our very dynamic beach safe and giving all patrollers the skills to do so. South Curly often provides extra excitement and being comfortable in our surf, whilst keeping your family & friends safe can be an asset for life.
SRC & Bronze
The minimum requirement to be an active Surf Lifesaver and join us on patrol is the Surf Rescue Certificate (min age 13 yrs) or the Bronze Medallion (min age 15 yrs). These are also the minmum requirement to provide water safety at Nippers.
Surf Rescue Certificate
The Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC) course is the entry level patrolling award and provides participants with the knowledge of basic patrolling and surf awareness in order to become a probationary patroller and provide water safety for Nippers. The last stepping stone of the Nippers journey to transition to a cadet.
- Minimum age - 13yrs and above
- Prerequisite : 200m swim in 5 minutes
- Outcome : Patrolling Member
- Course Duration : 7-8 weeks
Candidates train in groups for approximately seven (7) weeks, training weekly in the water on the Sundays and 4 midweek sessions for the Dry content. Candidates will be assessed on various CPR and radio skills and team work in a patrolling situation.
This course is run once a season with a Spring course starting in October.
Bronze Medallion
The Bronze Medallion course provides participants with the knowledge of basic patrolling and surf awareness in order to be able to participate in lifesaving operations.
- Minimum age - 15yrs and above
- Prerequisite : 400m swim in 9 minutes
- Outcome : Patrolling Member
- Course Duration : 7-8 weeks
Candidates train in groups for approximately eight (8) weeks, training twice per week and will be assessed on various skills in communications and team work in a patrolling situation. The candidates will also come away with a nationally recognised First Aid Certificate and Advanced Resuscitation Certificate.
This course is run twice a season with a Spring course starting in October & a summer course starting at the end of January.
Rescue Boat Training
When the surf gets "more demanding" and things get more complicated our IRB teams are called upon. Take your life saving skills up another level, join our amazing IRB crew and drivers and learn how to deal with and navigate probably some of the most challenging surf conditions on the northern beaches
IRB Crew
The Inflatable Rescue Boat (IRB) Crew course provides participants with the skills and knowledge to effectively crew an Inflatable Rescue Boat in surf rescue operations
- Minimum age : 15yrs and above
- Prerequisite : Bronze Medallion
- Outcome : IRB Crew
- Course Duration : approx 4 weeks - depends on candidate and being able to display skills in various surf conditions

IRB Driver
The Silver Medallion Inflatable Rescue Boat Driver (IRB Driver) course provides participants with the skills and knowledge to effectively drive an Inflatable Rescue Boat in surf rescue operations
Minimum age : 17yrs and above
- Prerequisite : IRB crew & Bronze Medallion
- Outcome : IRB Driver
- Course Duration : 8 + weeks - depends on candidate and being able to display skills in various surf conditions

All members are required to be active and renewed to participate is any South Curly training and water activity for insurance purposes. Please make sure you membership is up to date and you have completed the skills maintenance for prerequisites.
Advanced First Aid
At South Curl Curl we also provide many opportunities to enhance your First Aid capabilities through more advanced First Aid training. Why not go to the next level and join us in our Advanced Resus and First Aid courses.
Advanced Resuscitation Certificate
The Advanced Resuscitation Techniques Certificate (ARTC) provides participants with the skills and knowledge to use oxygen, airway management devices and automated defibrillators during resuscitation, and to administer oxygen to conscious or unconscious breathing casualties.
- Minimum age : 15yrs and above
- Prerequisite : Provide First Aid Course
- Outcome : ART Patrolling Member
- Course Duration : 4 evenings

Provide First Aid Course
Trains participants in the skills and knowledge to manage emergency first aid situations until professional medical support is available.
- Minimum age : 14/15yrs and above
- Prerequisite : Complete the Elearning pre-work
- Outcome : First Aid Certificate
- Course Duration : Full day course
This course runs generally inline with the ARTC course and is a prerequisite for ARTC
